Visit the historical past of a World Heritage city.
The beautiful historical center of Alentejo's city of Évora receives the Pousada Convento de Évora - Historic Hotel, a charming hotel that invites us to feel a place with centuries of history, and opens the doors to the World Heritage which surrounds us.
This hotel is installed in the old Săo Joăo Evangelista Monastery, founded in 1485 by D. Rodrigo Melo and built in the place where the Arab castle of Évora existed. During the 18th century, as a result of the damages caused by the 1755 earthquake, the building had to be reconstructed and in 1834 was closed by royal decree.
In mid 20th century, the monastery was renewed and adapted to allow its transformation into a hotel, practically maintaining the original structure of the building intact. The monk's simple and coarse old cells were converted into rooms with a distinctive and refined decoration.
On the ground floor the monk's dining hall is now the breakfast room or Winter dining room, in the cloister lunches and dinners are served and the old kitchen receives us as a living room.
We highlight a magnificent flight of marble stairs leading to the first floor and to the Império hall, where you may appreciate the mural paintings by Francisco de Figueiredo and portraits of characters from Portuguese literature and history, as well as of the founder of this magnificent monastery.
